Attention to diversity: designing a collaborative activity

This project was based on the 'cooperative learning'. It is an approach to organizing classroom activities into academic and social learning experiences.

In our case, we have to expose the more didactically possible our topic, related to attention to diversity. Our topic's title was 'Special Education Needs Provision within Mainstream Education.'

In order to prepare our session (we had to be like teachers), we found the information on the internet.

Once we found all the information we considered appropriate, we had to think about pedagogical methods for sharing this information with our partners (or in this case, our students).

We divided our one-hour class in two main parts: Target Groups and Measures.

  • TARGET GROUPS.

  • We divided the class in four main target groups:
    1. Special education needs related to physical,  psychic or sensory disability, or serious conduct disorder.
    2. Specific learning difficulties.
    3. High intellectual capacities.
    4. Needs resulting from a late entry into the education system.

Just above, we can see the different characteristics they had to identify as belonging to their target group. They also had to justify the reason why they think that characteristcs were part of their target group.

  • MEASURES.

  • In order to teach them what measures should be applied to help the target groups we played a game. The game was like the 'memory play'. We put all cards face down separated in two colours: orange and green.
The orange one corresponded to the target groups and the green ones were the measures for trying to solve the educational needs of the students.
Our 'students' had to turn out each orange card with the corresponding measure (green cards).

I found this project very interesting, because it allow us to understand the importance of the 'team-work', that help students to develop our their own answers.
It was also funny to work on it, and I left the class with the impression that our session was very productive also for our peers.
